Urea and ammonia plant material

CRA selection for fertiliser process conditions

Fertiliser plant chemistry is brutal: carbamate in the urea synthesis loop, hot hydrogen and nitrogen in the ammonia converter, and acid service in the downstream units. Each section has its own qualified material and substituting down the list is how leaks start.

How we choose the material for this duty.

  • Urea synthesis and carbamate service: Alloy 825, 317L and urea-grade stainless
  • Ammonia converter and reformer sections: Alloy 800HT, SA387 Gr 22 and A335 P22
  • Acid handling in downstream units: Alloy 825 and Hastelloy C276
  • Pressure parts and vessels: SA516 Gr 70 and SA387 Gr 11 / 22
  • Heat exchangers and waste heat boilers: 317L, 310S and nickel alloy tubing

Grades we would specify.

Questions buyers ask about this duty.

Why Alloy 825 in the urea loop?

Ammonium carbamate attacks most stainless steels; 825's nickel, molybdenum, copper and titanium combination resists both the reducing and oxidising conditions found around the synthesis loop and resists chloride stress corrosion cracking at the same time.

Can you supply against the licensor's material specification?

Yes. Send the licensor specification or the line list and we will quote grade by grade with the testing and certification each item needs, including PMI and third-party inspection where the spec calls for it.

Send the duty, not just the grade.

Tell us the service conditions, the current material and what life you are getting. Our Dubai desk comes back with the grade, the thickness and what is in stock.
